Mattress Warranty Guide for Military Members: What’s Actually Covered
Every mattress comes with a warranty, but few buyers read the fine print carefully — and military members have unique considerations that make warranty terms especially important. PCS moves, deployment storage, and changing housing configurations all have potential implications for mattress warranty coverage. Understanding what’s actually covered — and what isn’t — before you buy prevents unpleasant surprises down the road.
What Mattress Warranties Typically Cover
Standard mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects, including: visible sagging or indentation that exceeds a specified depth (typically 0.75–1.5 inches) when no weight is on the mattress; physical defects in the materials such as foam cracking, coil spring failures, or cover seam failures; and issues with the mattress’s structural integrity that arise from the manufacturing process rather than from use. What this means in practice: if your mattress develops a significant sag where you sleep, and you can measure it exceeding the warranty threshold, you likely have a valid claim.
What Mattress Warranties Don’t Cover
Most warranties explicitly exclude: normal body impressions (shallow indentations under the warranty depth threshold); damage from improper foundations or bed frames; stains, burns, or physical damage from misuse; comfort preferences that change over time; and in many cases, mattresses that have been moved from the original delivery address. This last point is significant for military members — some warranty language implies the warranty applies only at the original delivery address, which could theoretically be used to deny a claim after a PCS move. However, most reputable brands do not enforce this clause strictly; if you have concerns, contact the brand directly to ask for written clarification before purchasing.
Warranty Length Comparison
Industry standard: 10-year limited warranty. Better than average: 15–25 year limited warranty (Birch offers 25 years). Best in class: Lifetime warranty (WinkBeds, Bear, Nolah, DreamCloud, Nectar). Lifetime warranties are increasingly common among premium and mid-range brands. A lifetime warranty that covers sagging over 0.75 inches is more valuable than a 10-year warranty with a 1.5-inch threshold — the measurement threshold matters as much as the warranty duration.
Protecting Your Warranty Through PCS Moves
Keep your original purchase receipt and warranty documentation in a cloud storage location or email folder so it’s accessible regardless of where you’re stationed. Take photos of your mattress before each PCS move to document its condition at the time of the move — this can be important if damage occurs during transit and you need to determine whether a warranty claim or a moving company damage claim is appropriate. Use a mattress bag during every move to protect against the moisture and physical damage that can void warranty coverage.
Filing a Warranty Claim
If you believe you have a warranty claim, document the issue thoroughly with photos and measurements. Contact the brand’s customer service with your original order number, documentation of the issue, and a description of the problem. Most brands have a straightforward claims process — fill out a form, submit photos, and wait for review. If the claim is approved, brands typically offer a replacement mattress or a prorated credit toward a new purchase depending on the mattress’s age and warranty terms. Keep in mind that shipping a replacement mattress to an APO/FPO address may require additional coordination with the brand’s customer service team.
